Renovating our Stucco Ceiling
After applying a stucco net, a good contemporary substitute for thatch as a backing, new layers of stucco and plaster were applied (fig. 10). Before we removed the original ceiling, René had measured the dimensions of the freeze. With those measurements he made a zinc ‘comb’ that would be needed to create the new freeze.

This staircase gives access to the public gallery of the Upper House and therefore has a heavy visitor load. The development plans provided for a lift next to this stairwell to reduce the load on this monumental staircase. Considering the condition of the stucco ceiling, it was decided to carry out the conservation work before starting the renovation of the Binnenhof complex. There were concerns that work immediately adjacent to this stairwell could cause more damage to the stucco ceiling. All this resulted in an order for conservation by the end of 2020. This is likely to provide a better picture for the attribution of the various stucco ceilings to the plasterers in question.
27To properly assess the condition of the interior stucco, an on-site survey was carried out in 2013. This was prompted by the flaking paintwork, cracking in the stucco and the adhesion of the stucco to the substrate. The sagging in the stucco ceiling also called for an examination of the structure.
This included work on the dome and corridor walls in the old town hall. We chose René because we had faith in his capabilities. But also because he does this on a regular basis; he had a mould for the center ornament already lying around from a previous renovation project! And that made it unnecessary to create one from the center ornament in our dining room (which would have involved a risk of damaging that ceiling in the process). We searched for a plasterer who could restore the original ceiling; we found René Egas. Unfortunately, after a thorough investigation, René advised us not to restore the ceiling.
23The dimensions of the stucco ceiling in the stairwell are about 5.15 m by 6.00 m. This larger area is due to the double cove present in the stucco ceiling. The height of the interior cove is approximately 60 cm. For Latex Spuiten , a two-month statutory warranty applies. There was Buitengevel stucwerk with the plasterers working in the other room to exchange data and experiences. 46The cove in the middle section appeared to be cracked in many places. Cohesion in the stuccowork was missing as a result. Where such pieces were loose, the old stuccowork was removed.
